Top 5 Most Memorable Sports Moments

So I was thinking the other day what are the most memorable sporting events I have watched? I know kind of a random idea but it really got me thinking about it. I made parameters that excluded the 1988 World Series when Kirk Gibson hit the homerun because, although I can remember it, I can't remember specific things about the event.

I narrowed the list to the five sports games that I remember watching or being at and why they were memorable to me.

5. Lakers vs Trailblazer game seven Western Conference Finals 6/4/2000

The Lakers were the best team all season and had homecourt through the playoffs. However the Traiblazers proved to be a difficult team to pass. At the start of the fourth quarter of game seven the Lakers were down 15 and my dad was mad. I remember me and my mother forcing him to stay in the back yard during the fourth quarter because he had a bad attitude (now looking back that was too mean and I would probably be the one forced to the backyard now). But the Lakers went on a huge run that was capped by the famous allyoop from Kobe to Shaq. The Lakers went on to win 89-84.

4. UCLA vs Gonzaga Sweet 16 3/26/2006

UCLA was the number two seed in the west and was coming off a tough second round game against Alabama. Gonzaga had all-American Adam Morrison and his poor excuse for a mustache. UCLA had won nine in a row heading into the match up with Gonzaga. From the opening tip Gonzaga had control of the game pushing the lead to as high as 17 points. In the second half, UCLA was able to chip away at the lead. With a little over three minutes left and the lead at nine, UCLA went on a run to pull within one with 19.7 seconds left in the game. Then Jordan Farmar gets a steal and gets the ball to Luc Richard Mbah a Moute and the rest is history. I watched the game with my dad and two of my friends. I remember my father standing on a chair, one friend on a table and all of us yelling and screaming. The sight of Adam Morrison crying on the ground is still a great memory.

3. Angels vs Giants game 6 World Series 10/26/2002

After being beat 16-4 two nights earlier in San Francisco it was do or die for the Angels. I was at a gathering with a few friends at a church leaders house. I busted out the thundersticks and my rally monkey. The Angels were down 5-0 in the middle of the seventh and I remember thinking well that's it. They made a heck of a run but that's it. Dusty Baker, the Giants manager, took out pitcher Russ Ortiz sfter he gave up back to back singles. Then first basemen Scott Spezio came up and blasted a three run homerun. In the eight inning the Angels continued to hit the cover off the ball. Darin Erstad hit a homerun, Tim Salmon and Garret Anderson had back to back hits. Then Troy Glaus hit a two run double to take the lead. Then closer Troy Percival came into the game in the ninth inning and saved the 6-5 victory. I remember yelling myself horse at my church leaders house and then getting into a thunderstick war with everyone that was there.

2. UCLA vs USC football 12/2/2006

I tried all week to get my shift at Sport Chalet covered so that I could watch the UCLA-USC football game. If USC (ranked second in the country) wins they go to the National Championship game. The game was taking place at the Rose Bowl and I knew that USC was notorious for not playing that great at UCLA's home stadium. I also knew that UCLA's defense was the best that it had been in a long time. However, when I couldn't get the day off I was forced to watch the game on a 12 inch fuzzy screen in the back of the old ski shop. What I watched was a defensive battle that ended with David beating Goliath 13-9. Much of the game was a blurr but I remember being happy to help customers and rub in the UCLA victory to the USC fans that came to the store from the game.

1. Angels vs Giants game seven World Series 10/27/2002

This game is clear and away number one because it was the only game of the five that I was actually at. My dad and I got tickets from a family friend the day of the game. They weren't the best seats but just being there was the most important thing. Although it was an anti-climactic game, with all of the drama occurring in game six. Garret Anderson's three run double was all that was needed to win the game. I will say that being in that environment was the most exciting thing I have ever experienced as a sports fan and if you ever have the opportunity to be at a championship clinching game, no matter what the cost, you should be there.
